Greetings,
Customers of BPI in Bacolod Philippines, have received a check at their previous address here in the U.S. (Their brother & wife live here in that address now, and I am helping all parties).
The check is from Wells Fargo, where they used to bank. We’re wondering what is the best way to deposit that check in their account in Bacolod, and we seek your kind recommendation. Possibilities we thought of are:
1. Just mailing the check to the party’s address in Bacolod. However they expressed concern about the reliability of mail service.
2. Mailing the check to their local BPI branch in Bacolod. But would the bank personnel know what to do with it? Would they follow up and contact the customer and inform them? We’re thinking that the customer would still need to come in personally and endorse the check. Or might that not be necessary as long as it is deposited into their account?
3. Or, is there some way we can scan and deposit it into their account online, without needing to risk mailing it? Naturally it would not have the customer’s signature, since they are in the PI, and the check is here in the U.S. with us.
4. Or would one of the “correspondent banks” here in the US be able to help in any way? We showed the check to a Wells Fargo bank officer, but she had no suggestions.
I can send you a scan of the check, if you like.
Thank you,
Donald Graves
Hi Donald, as of today, online deposit for checks in the Philippines is only for peso checks, only with some fully digital accounts and should be endorsed by the payee. I think the best option is to send the Wells Fargo check to the payee in Bacolod using a courier like Fedex. Usually, a bank here accepts a US-issued dollar cheque deposit only if the payee has a US dollar account with the bank (some require that the account has been opened at least 6 months prior). If the payee doesn’t yet have a US dollar account, it will be good for the payee to ask banks about their policy for accepting/clearing US-issued cheques. Security Bank states on its website that it can clear US cheques in around 8 days (30 to 45 days is the usual time frame for clearing) and might also do it even if the account is a peso account.
in my case, securityBank refused to process my american check even though they understood it had to be sent back by them to america for processing, & thus be subjected to american regulations for processing; their reason is that they wanted to impose the pilipino rule of having the check diplayed in the name showing, both for my spouse & me, an “&/or” between both names; But that rule doesn’t apply in america, as they only request signature of both parties, then either one of their single acccounts could process w/o the other being a part of it; they might’ve been scared of the bsp foreign check clearing house before check is sent back to issuing country;
i should also add that the check was an official bank check, Not handwritten, & it also had enhanced safety features that included a qr code, among other things.
but it’s up to the person you get, how well trained they are, their knowledge of the foreign processing (securitybank has no international presence outside of asia, so that must’ve weighed alot into their employee training into not emphasizing international transaction knowledge for their reps), & their relationship with their upper management if they were to ‘get in trouble’, so, basically, fear.
Unable to locate BPI , LOS ANGELES CA BRANCH , to make deposit to the Dollar account
Hi Joe, itong list dito is a list of BPI correspondent banks in the USA. Matagal nang walang BPI branch in the US. Meron noon years ago sa New York. Naging remittance center, then nag-closed na rin. I think the best way to deposit to your dollar account in the Philippines is to transact online with XOOM.com. You can send using your bank account or debit or credit card. The fee is around 8 dollars for a $1000 remittance. BPI might also charge $5 to $10 for inbound remittance and credit to your dollar account. My US client is paying me US dollars via Xoom.com. I get the sent dollars over the counter at BDO or Metrobank. If ever you use Xoom, I hope you can share later on how much BPI charged for inbound remittance.
My brother in law arrived in the US Sept 30, 2021 bringing along his BPI dollar account card. He had already tried 5 ATM machines (2 in San Diego & 4 in Minnesota) but the machine keep declining his card/always a transaction error. He went online, checked his dollar account & the international access is green (meaning good for foreign transactions). The funny thing is his BDO card worked but not the BPI card. He will be here for at least 6 months & did not bring a lot of money thinking BPI card will work (as it should be). How can BPI solve this?
Hi JB, BPI says the maximum withdrawal limit per day is $500. In case your brod-in-law’s card is not the Mastercard debit card, or for assistance, he can call BPI +632 891 0000 or toll-free nos. AT&T 1-800-225-1202 / 011 800-2748-9100 | SPRINT 1-866-698-9100 /011 800-2748-100 |

Hi there I’m not sure if you can provide me with the correct information. When I went back home for the first time i 2007 in the Philippines, I opened up a BPI Savings account with an ATM Card. But it has been so long that my account became dormant because no activity. Now I wanted to reactivate that but of course I can’t come home to do that. Is there a way that I can request for that to get activated again, because I may have to use it now? Can you kindly tell me if that is something I can take care of online or which number do I need to call. I remember there used to be a branch here in Los Angeles, California, I just don’t know if it still exists. Do you think you can help me?
Hi Anne, I’m sorry that I can’t help you. But I can give you some helpful information. It’s been 14 years since 2007, so your account has been dormant for more than 10 years, which is the time threshhold for a bank account to be escheated or given to the Philippine Treasury Dept. I’m not sure if your account has been turned over to the Treasury. You can call BPI BPI +632 891 0000 or toll-free nos. AT&T 1-800-225-1202 / 011 800-2748-9100 | SPRINT 1-866-698-9100 /011 800-2748-100 | VERIZON 011 800-2748-9100. I’ll email you and send you BSP circulars related to dormant accounts.
Hello, My father who is now 98 years old living in the US has a BPI account. He would like to transfer money from the account to his bank here (USBank). My brother and myself are both co-depositors on the savings account and we also live in the US. I believe the account is dormant as it was last accessed in 2015. We have contacted the BPI branch in Tarlac where the account was opened but they are telling us that we have to get a special power of attorney and go in person to activate the account and initiate a bank transfer. Is there any other option as it would be difficult for us, especially my father, to travel overseas now. What would you recommend? Thank you.
Hi Michael, I’m sorry but what the bank officer in Tarlac told you is the only option. There’s no BPI bank in the USA (there are only BPI remittance partners), so there’s no option of processing your account reactivation there in the USA. It’s the policy of all Philippine banks to require account owners to appear in person at their banks to reactivate dormant accounts. I know only one bank which has reactivated a dormant account for a Filipino account owner in Canada through their Canadian branch, and that is PNB, as PNB has branches in the USA and in Canada. You have 10 years since the start of dormancy to reactivate your account before the account will be turned over to the Philippine Treasury. So maybe when the pandemic problem is over, you can have a special power of attorney made, signed and stamped at any Philippine embassy or consulate there in the USA, and then bring it to BPI Tarlac. If you’re the only one coming over here, then have a SPA from your father and your brother giving you the power to reactivate the account from dormancy, make a wire transfer from the bank to your father’s account in the USA and close the account. Before having the SPA made, call again the Tarlac branch and ask what specifics should be included in the SPA to be able to reactivate the account and transfer the full balance to your father’s account in US Bank. Ask if your father and brother can make a joint SPA (one SPA) or should each make their own SPA (2 SPAs).
Nora, thanks so much for your reply. You have cleared up a lot of confusion and relieved my anxiety about this situation. The information you provided gives us what we need to move forward and we will make the necessary arrangements to get the account reactivated and funds transferred. Thanks again!
Hi Michael, thank you for your appreciative and kind words. I hope you’ll be able to reactivate your account in the soonest possible time. And I hope you can get the name of the BPI officer you’ll be talking with so you’ll know whom to approach when you go to BPI Tarlac.
Hello good Am po my mom is here in the US and she is getting beneficiary pension from my dad, and she can’t go home to the Philippines due to pandemic cuz she is too old already she is already 88yrs old. I am her daughter . I went home last 2019 to ask what happened that she can’t used her ATm card anymore to withdraw here in the US . I went to your branch where she opened her account , They took the card from me and and they said no longer accept that card cuz of old card and no chips and the assistant branch manager told me that we need authorization for to get it . But I couldn’t get to go home because of this pandemic. I offered the assistant branch manager to FaceTime my mom for her to authorize me but she said she need a sign papers … is there anyway she can withdraw money or get her ATM card … hope to get response to this…
Hi Maria, I wonder why the BPI bank officer did not advise you to get authorization letter from your mother in the US when you were here in the Phils, so you could have claimed your mother’s new card at that time. I think that was the time when authorization letters were accepted since they were changing all old cards. Do you have someone in the Philippines whom you can fully trust to claim your mother’s card? If there is, call again BPI and ask if your mother can authorize someone to claim her new card. Is a simple authorization letter with a scan of her IDs enough? Or do they need a special power of attorney? Does the SPA need to be verified by Phil embassy or consulate in the US? or a US SPA is enough? BPI +632 891 0000 or toll-free nos. AT&T 1-800-225-1202 / 011 800-2748-9100 | SPRINT 1-866-698-9100 /011 800-2748-100 | VERIZON 011 800-2748-9100.
There could be another problem — dormancy problem — if your mother’s last withdrawal was more than 2 years ago. If more than 2 years, ask BPI if your mother can have a SPA made which will grant power to her trusted relative to reactivate her account, transfer the full balance of the account via wire transfer to your mother’s US bank account, and to claim the new atm card. I hope a BPI officer can help you.
Good evening…mag ask Lang po ako?…are you affiliated with Chase bank and bank of America?…
Hi Kristel, based on my research, hindi affiliated ang BPI sa Chase Bank or Bank of America. But if you want to make a wire transfer from those banks to BPI or vice versa, puede. Puede ring mag-widro sa BPI atms using your US-issued atm or debit cards, meron lang 200 pesos or more na ATM fee.
Good Afternoon, On December 21, 2021 – I was directed to contact BPI P. Tuazon Cubao, Quezon City Branch to reactivate my account that they put on HOLD without notice re: being Dormant. The last transaction is November, 2019. I talked to Melody Palima, BPI, Assistant Business Manager, verified my identity and will send me a form to complete. We even had an exchange of email reconfirming that I want to reactivate my account on which I replied affirmative. Today, January 10, 2022 – I have no updates or the promised form to complete. I am in the US and can’t go home. Is there anything I could do besides to wait? Thank you for your help.
Hi Alex, did Ms. Palima say she’s going to send the form via email or posta mail? Because if it’s postal mail, then it will take some time. This is the first time I’m knowing that BPI now reactivates a dormant account via phone and a form. They always insist on personal appearance at the branch with valid IDs. I suggest you email Ms. Palima again and make a follow-up, clicking “Reply” on your last email so she can see your previous communication.
Nora, thank you very much for your quick response. As I understood, she will email me the form since she reconfirmed my email address. And also, my account has my mom’s address in the Phil. who died on March, 2021. Melody also mentioned that after I completed the form we will have a ZOOM or Facetime. She said they are very busy so it is not really clear what she wants to do. But anyway, I agreed on whatever she wants. I did already sent a follow up email dated 01/08/2022. I am frustrated for no response after I replied to her email on December 21, 2021 reconfirming that “YES” I want to reactivate my account. Is there a toll free direct number in the Makati main office? I had already spent $102.00 on phone call for nothing. Thank you!!
Now, I remember, Melody mentioned about completing the form, scan and return to her. And that we will have a further contact after.. And the 01/08/2022 email I sent is a forward message that includes her email and my response. Thanks again Nora!!
Good Evening Nora, Today, I received an update from Melody. The P. Tuazon Cubao Branch is currently WFH due to rise in COVID cases. She will send me the soft copy when they get back to office. Thank you!
Goodevening Nora. My grandfather made wire transfer from US to my BPI Account and he said that I need to pick up that in BPI Ayala . Do I need to make a personal apperance in the bank to claim it? And also, is there any chance of transaction rejection when account number and account name did not match? Thank you
Hi Christine, if it’s a wire transfer, then it’s a transfer from his US account to your BPI account. It should be deposited to your account and you can check your balance via BPI online/mobile and withdraw via ATM. Yes, if account name and number do not match, the money won’t be deposited. Your grandfather should amend his wire transfer transaction.
Hello, I am trying to wire funds USD to my USD account in BPI. The wire will come from a non-bank entity such as Vanguard – an investment/brokerage account. I have tried wiring money to non-BPI philippine bank in the past, and the bank usually provide a single corresspondent bank.
With the list of correspondent banks that you mentioned, should I just select any one of these banks to use? Thank you in advance.
Hi Mia, yes, I think Wells Fargo is a good choice, since it also has a special remittance relationship with BPI. Either of Bank of America or JPMorgan Chase will also be good, since these have corporate banking operations in the Philippines.
Hi Nora, quick question, I have a dollar account with PBI, is there a limit of how much money I can wire/transfer from the bpi Philippines to my account here in the US and how much does it cost to do bank to bank transfer? Appreciate your response.
Hi Tess, based on BPI’s online instructions, you can send up to $10k per transaction. Cost is $16 plus correspondent fee (if your bank is not a correspondent of BPI) or your US bank’s receiving fee (if your US bank charges a fee). Ihe non-BPI fee may be charged by BPI for forwarding to their partners, or may be charged by your US bank upon deposit into your US account. You can see BPI Outward Remittance on your mobile app, scroll down from Login button. You can also see it here: BPI Outward Remittance
Hi Nora, my wife and I are trying to send about $35000 for a downpayment on a house to a construction contractor who has a BPI account. I have a Chase account for a wire transfer but they will only send USD and the contractor needs PH pesos. Is there a better way to send large sum of money in pesos to a BPI account? Thank you, Bo
Hi Bo, yes, your Chase Bank will send in USD via wire transfer to BPI and BPI will receive it in USD, but will credit it to your contractor’s account in pesos (I’m assuming your contractor’s account is in pesos). BPI will use its own USD-peso exchange rate at the time of crediting. BPI’s exchange rate might be a bit lower than popular money changers like Sanry’s or Czarina or Eastwest Bank (which I think gives the best rates among banks), or international remitters like WISE or Xoom, but the safety/security of your money is of course your priority. So for this big amount, I think Chase to BPI via wire transfer is your best option.
Thank you so much! You’ve been very helpful.
I live here in California and I need a new debit card but I cannot travel to the Phil. anymore because I am taking care of my husband. My son who lives in the Phil. is in possession of my old BPI debit card and he was told that he cannot act on my behalf on renewing my old debit card. I cannot travel to the Phil. Is there some kind of consideration on this case that my son is permitted to renew my old debit card?
Hi Nellie, it’s sad, but it’s BPI’s policy (and most banks here) that it should be the account owner who should go to the bank to request for a card replacement. Banks are strict with their security procedures. If you have enrolled your account online, you can transfer money from your account to his account (any bank or wallet) and send you later on your money. But the success of this will depend on whether you can receive a code (one time PIN) from BPI there. If you have not enrolled, you can try to enroll your account in BPI online banking. Again this will depend on whether the phone # you registered with BPI can receive an OTP from BPI. If none of these work, you can message BPI through their Contact Us page.
Hello, I have a BPI dollar account and I would like to transfer a significant amount to my US bank account. I’m aware of the Outward Remittance but it’s limited to $10,000. I don’t want to do that multiple times. Kindly advise…. Thanks in advance.
Hi Jo, very sorry my reply is so much delayed. I was googling to check if there are now changes with BPI, and then was distracted. Yes, it’s sad BPI imposes a maximum limit while it seems BDO does not. BDO’s FAQ page says there’s no limit to the amount you can transfer. Union Bank allows outward wire transfer for up to $20k per day and up to $200k per month.
But maybe you’ve already explored going to a BPI branch and I hope they allow bigger amounts over the counter. Other ways like sending thru Western Union and Moneygram are expensive and not safe since you need to go to their stores with large amounts of cash.
Hi,
I have a BPI account with “Debit” card and already enrolled in online banking. I enrolled last September in BPI Roosevelt. This is a peso account. My question: Is there an affiliated ATM BPI bank here in the US so i can withdraw to dollar? Is there a administrative fee? Please let me know any details.
Thanks,
Edwin G. Flores
Hi Edwin, sad to say there’s no BPI-affiliated ATM in the US. If your card has a Visa or Mastercard logo, you can withdraw from any Visa/Mastercard-linked ATM there in the US. Withdrawal fee is $3.5 and maximum limit per withdrawal is 10k pesos. You may be able to adjust this limit if you have mobile banking and if you’re able to receive one-time password via text from the Philippines (BPI). You might want to test first if your connection is okay by doing balance inquiry ($1 per inquiry).
