Finally, after a long time, the BSP has decided to publish the balance sheets of rural banks. I’m glad that when I checked my previous listing of the Top Philippine rural banks using data from various sources, I got most of the leading rural banks correct.
I heard an argument before that publishing rural banks’ rankings will have a bad impact on rural banks, like maybe killing the smallest rural banks. On the contrary, ranking the top rural banks will inspire more competition, more efforts to be efficient and innovative, and hopefully lead to mergers and consolidations that will give rise to stronger rural banks.
